| After Scott Finds the Engine Room...
|
Were Linda's Nails That Long? (goof): During the scene immediately following the one in which Scott fails to convince the Doctor not to lead his group to the bow, Scott and Rogo almost come to blows. Keep your eye on Scott's right shoulder. Right after Martin steps between Scott and Rogo, you can see a very small rip in the right shoulder of Scott's shirt — but after Scott ends his "...if it's passable, we're gonna do it MY way!" speech and the shot cuts to him marching down the corridor, the tiny rip has turned into a major tear that exposes his entire right shoulder. And his shoulder appears to be injured — which it is most definitely not by the time he pulls Belle from the water; I suppose the swim washed off his stage blood. - JR
The Dry Look Is In (goof): After Scott finds the missing Robin, the two are knocked down by a deluge of water. Cut to Mike forcing Susan up the ladder to the hatch into the Engine Room. Cut again, and when we see Scott and Robin, both are dry from their hair to their waists. - JR |

| The Airshaft, the Suddenly-Appearing Bra Strap, and Shelley's Self-Animated Hair
|
Goof: Scott has to un-latch a solid metal cover over the entrance to the tunnel that leads to the airshaft, and then pry open a grate. If the tunnel to every deck is "identical" (as Acres tells him), then there should be a solid metal cover at the end of the tunnel the group takes — with latches on the deck-side of the cover. But there is no cover; when Scott gets there, there is only a grate, and no cover. By all logic, the deck-end of every tunnel should have been completely impenetrable (and having been told every outlet was "identical," Scott should have figured that trying to get through would be futile). - JR
Goof: When Scott reaches the end of the lower vent duct and reaches the vertical airshaft, he has to open a hinged screen, which has a small hook-and-eye catch. The catch is right side up. I had to look acouple of times just to make sure I wasn't "seeing things." :-) - Nancy Mrazik
Goof: Just panties indeed! Mrs. Rogo suddenly has on a White Ladies' Bra upon coming to the end of the crawl through the First Dirty Tunnel. It is very clear in the close-up as Scott, on the ladder, points at her, while she sits with Mike. - Paul
Goof: When Robin pauses on the airshaft ladder to have a most inappropriately-timed chat with Mrs. Rosen about the 600-pound swordfish (ultimately making Robin the cause of Acres' death!), watch Belle; as the scene cuts back and forth between her and Robin, her hair goes from slicked-back to not-terribly-wet-at-all. - JR |

| Engine-Room Swim Zipper-Up-the-Back Moments
|

Belle's Sleight of Hand(s) (goof / continuity error / jump cut): As Scott is getting ready to swim to the Engine Room, there's a medium close-up of Belle with her right hand about mid-bosom as she fingers her swimming medal, which hangs from a chain around her neck. Cut to a shot of Scott, in which we see only Belle's lower half behind him, and her hands are at her waist, still fiddling with the medal — whose chain has gotten miraculously long all of a sudden. Cut back to the previous shot of Belle, still fiddling with the medal, which again reaches only as far as her breastbone. - JR
The Bap Whap: While everybody's standing around waiting for Scott to tug on the rope and Belle is getting ready to dive in after him, there's a tight shot of Manny and Belle, with Nonnie just behind and to the left of Belle. Belle moves her left arm back rather suddenly, and her elbow catches Nonnie square in the boob. Watch the look on Carol's face — it's one of obvious surprise and discomfort! But she recovers quickly, and stays very much in character. Consummate actor! - JR
1. Twisty-ties affixing the rope to the railings as the cast swims through the underwater passage;
2. the fact that Linda makes the effort to pull down her top while swimming, PROBABLY so they wouldn't have to do a Take Two;
3. Divers' Swim Fins tippy-toe-ing behind Scott as he forges forward underwater. - Paul
Shallow Scott: When Scott is swimming underwater to get to the engine room you can see a bit of his shoulder / back hit the surface of the water just before the end of one of the scenes. - Matt Thomas
The Corpse that Moves: A dead body in the Engine Room moves his hand ever so slightly from the lapping flames as Manny heads forth to join the others after Belle's Death. I have still not been able to notice this one, try as I might, but I suppose it is possible. Maybe he wasn't all the way dead? - Paul
What do I (JR) mean, "zipper-up-the-back moments"? It is an allusion not to the many actual zippers seen up the backs of Ladies' Dresses in the Poseidon Dining Salon, but something Stephen King dwells on repeatedly in his most worthy (non-fiction) book about fictional horror, Danse Macabre:
"We may only feel really comfortable with horror as long as we can see the zipper running up the monster's back, when we understand that we are not playing for keepsies."
And:
"...and you understand, don't you, that when it comes to horror movies, the only thought process really necessary to break the mood is for a friend to lean over and whisper, 'See the zipper running down his back?'"

| Which Side is Starboard Again?
|
| At the end, the Greek rescue team cuts a hole near the port side (after capsizing) inner propeller, assuming that the stern is behind the camera. Yet the final shot reveals the survivors climbing out on the starboard side. Film printed in reverse or just a goof? Might be both. - Phil Dearing |

| Jumping Jewelry
|
Goofs Galore: As mentioned elsewhere, Nonnie's pendant, sash and vest disappear after the capsize. OK, so maybe they were torn off... but that doesn't explain what happens to Nonnie's ring — or anyone else's ring. Poseidoner Jewelry, you see, appears and disappears throughout the entire Film!
Linda wears a single piece of jewelry — most likely her engagement ring (as it is certainly not a plain wedding band) — in her first shot in The Film, as the camera zooms in on her deathly-pale face in the Rogos' stateroom.
In the Salon, she is still wearing the same ring, on the third finger of her left hand, and now also wears a big, gaudy hunk of rock (it looks like it may be surrounded by marcasite) on her left index finger, as well as another ring (which appears to be a dark, bluish rhinestone, nestled inside a rather vague, flower-like setting) on the third finger of her right hand.
As for the rest of Linda's jewelry, it stays with her, save for the faux-diamond bracelet on her right wrist and her earrings, all of which she hands to Mike before she climbs the Christmas tree.
Mike wears a big ring with a deep-red stone (which actually belongs to Ernie Borgnine) on the third finger of his left hand. This ring is visible throughout the scenes in the Rogos' stateroom and the Dining Room. It's mssing when he helps up-end the Christmas tree, and back on his finger when he helps Scott move the door in the linen area ("I always thought I was gonna catch it from some crumb-bum in some tenement...!").
It's gone again when he drops into the airshaft to save Acres, and still missing (much more noticeably) when his arms emerge from the airshaft-water to drag himself back onto the ladder, but back for the rest of the picture. The best shot of it is when Mike is cranking open the hatch to the propeller shaft.
Martin wears a very heavy, blocky silver ring set with a large, green, square-cut stone (which to my eye looks like jade, not emerald, but I can't be sure) on the little finger of his right hand. This ring is visible during his Power-Walk on the Deck, and most easily viewed in the Grand Salon during the close-up of his hands as he is counting out his vitamins. It's still present when Belle invites him to stand by her at midnight — but by the time we first see Martin post-capsize, when he throws his dinner jacket over Sad Vague Dirty Dead Lady (see Dining Room Extras), the ring is gone.
Magically, it reappears when he and the Rosens stand to listen to the Purser ("I want you all to stay where you are!"), and finally stays put, once and for all.
Manny clearly wears a wedding ring on (of course) the third finger of his left hand. It can be spotted as he and Belle relax on the deck (when he waves at Martin power-walking past), and is seen much more easily during the dining scenes, especially when the M.C. calls for everyone's attention to begin the countdown to midnight: In the only truly clear shot of Gangster Man's face, Manny turns his chair to face the stage, and braces his left hand on the back of his chair, showing off his ring.
By the time Manny is shown with an axe he's found (while the group is waiting for Scott's return from the Engine Room), his ring is gone, and is never seen again. It may even be missing by the time Manny holds Belle, post-capsize, when she begins to pray in Yiddish. It's very hard to tell.
Belle always has her wedding band on — but, as long as we're talking about the shot where she, Manny, and Martin rise to listen to the Purser, look at her left hand: What is she holding? A pair of glasses? What is that?
(If you're wondering what happens to Belle's string of pearls, she takes them off and hands them to Manny on the line, "Manny, if I get stuck... push.")
Father John wears a ring (silver, maybe) on the third finger of his right hand. That's a bit odd for a priest... Anyway, it's visible during his pre-sermon chat with Scott — and missing the next time we see him, when he is bandaging the wrist of Regal Estelle Winwood lady (see Dining Room Extras), and then reappears a few shots later (while he is still bandaging Estelle Winwood), when Scott approaches and tries to convince him to climb the tree.
Come to think of it, where is John in the Dining Room, pre-capsize? We don't see him anywhere after the Sermon on the Deck until this moment. Did he just wander in after the capize from a higher— er, lower deck?
Nonnie wears a ring with a pale blue stone on the third finger of her right hand (the hand holding the microphone) during rehearsal. It's difficult to tell if she's wearing it on New Year's Eve; it looks like she is while she's singing "Auld Lang Syne," but it's definitely gone by the time she starts to take her onstage tumble toward the piano. Of course, she could have taken it off... but it magically reappears by the time Martin finds her trying to awaken Dead Teddy. She keeps it on until the group gets to the stairway; when she grasps the railing with both hands (hanging her head), her ring is missing.
There's also a continuity error in this scene: when Scott asks, "Acres, is this the only way?" and Acres answers, "Yes, sir," there are two quick cuts; first, Nonnie still has both hands on the railing, and then, in the next shot, as Scott begins to pull himself up the backside of the stairway, Nonnie suddenly has her right hand on the railing, and her left hand resting lower on the back of the stairway, at waist level.
Nonnie's ring is back in place for a while (it's very visible when she screams bloody murder at the sight of water flooding the corridor), and then it's gone again; watch her right hand as she places both hands on Robin's shoulders and asks, "How long will we stay afloat?" But — lo and behold! — it's back on her finger when she's paralyzed with fear on the airshaft ladder, and stays there (on her finger, silly, not on the ladder) for the rest of The Film.
The fate of her pendant, however, is a mystery, as is that of her white vest and orange sash. "What happens to Nonnie's pendant, sash, and vest?" asks Paul. "Okay, so Rogo's bow-tie is askew and collar unbuttoned, and Martin donates his coat to a corpse, but what happened to poor Nonnie? She didn't have THAT far to fall — how did she lose so much stuff? "
We don't know. We will never know. One thing we do know is that Nonnie's sash has a life of its own — read more about that elsewhere in this section.
Finally... While pinky rings are not necessarily indicative of one's sexuality today, from about the 1950s through the 1970s, they most certainly were code for "I'm gay." It is extremely doubtful that Martin's pinky ring means anything at all; Red Buttons was straight, and James Martin really does have a bad crush on Nonnie. (In at least one draft — the third, to be precise — of the Poseidon script, Martin and Nonnie were supposed to kiss at the end of the barber shop scene.)
OK, so that doesn't mean Martin is positively not gay, but it's highly doubtful he is — or that his pinky ring is supposed to mean anything.
However, two actors who were definitely gay in real life — and one I believe was gay — also wear pinky rings in The Film: Fred Sadoff's (Linarcos) is seen clearly during the daytime scenes on the Bridge, and Roddy McDowall's can be spotted as Acres is pouring champagne for the Rogos; watch his left hand just as Linda says,"Yeah! And why we didn't fly, I'll never know!"
And while I do not know that Byron Webster was gay, I believe he was — and the Purser, too, is wearing a pinky ring. Watch for it when he folds his hands while answering Robin's question, "Tell me, sir, exactly what does a purser do?"
Incidentally (or not), each of these three actors wears his ring on the little finger of his left hand — while Martin wears his on the little finger of his right hand.
As for Jumping Jewelry...
The Purser's ring is missing from his pinky by the time he drags hmself into a sitting position on the edge of the shattered skylight. His bare pinky is very easy to see, since his left hand is grasping his right wrist.
Acres's ring is gone by the time he twists the tablecloth around the top of the Christmas tree, and back on again when he grasps the fallen door in the linen area (when Scott tells him to tell the others to "flatten themselves against the bulkhead"). It seems to vanish again when he tells Scott the batteries on the emergency circuits are supposed to stay operational for three hours, then reappears when Scott is seen prying open the gates (with the big, red DANGER sign).
In the end, only Linda and Belle keep their rings on throughout the entire picture. - JR
