| MAD Magazine No. 161, September, 1973: The Poopsidedown Adventure
|
The cover of MAD No. 161, which contains, IMNSHO, the greatest movie parody of all time, "The Poopsidedown Adventure."
I'm not alone in my opinion; notes DC Comics:
"September 1973 - MAD #161, featuring a spoof of The Poseidon Adventure illustrated by Mort Drucker, becomes the best-selling issue in the magazine's history. Like the Poseidon itself, we've been sinking ever since." |

Thank goodness MAD assigned Mort Drucker to draw "The Poopsidedown Adventure"; Drucker was — and still is — unquestionably the best caricaturist in the entire MAD stable of artists. |

|
A full twenty-five years after spoofing The Poseidon Adventure, MAD parodied Titanic — and paid tribute to its own '73 "Poopsidedown" cover. |

| Cracked Magazine No. 111, September, 1973
|
The poor cousin to MAD Magazine, Cracked issued its own Poseidon Adventure parody the same month. If MAD hadn't existed, this would have been a mildly amusing piece, but Cracked, as always (and to paraphrase Mike Rogo in The Book), was just "sucking hind t*t."
Still, Cracked was far superior to yet another imitator... |

| Crazy Magazine No. 1, October, 1973
|
If Cracked was a poor cousin to MAD, Crazy was the drooling bastard child of Cracked. Crazy's only asset was artist Mike Ploog, who, in the same issue, drew a decent rendition of "Kung Fu," which almost compensated for the lame text (but didn't). Crazy should have used Ploog for its unbearably awful Poseidon spoof as well — which, as you can see, was not only bereft of humor, but appears to have been drawn by a child with a nervous disorder and in desperate need of life-drawing classes. If you're a real masochist, visit Diversions of the Groovy Kind to see the whole awful mess. |
