Capsized: A Tale of Two Poseidons (Society overboard!)
John P. Garry III, Bright Lights Film Journal, November 2006
"Upon the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 commentators have argued that American popular cultural has not changed significantly. Any minor changes have been in the direction of more vulnerable heroes and stories expressing greater uncertainty. A significant cultural change, however, occurred around 1980. The effects of this change are still with us and have not been affected by 9-11. A good way to gauge this development is to compare The Poseidon Adventure (1972, directed by Ronald Neame) with its 2006 remake, Poseidon, directed by Wolfgang Petersen. ..." |

Inside 'Poseidon'
Gerri Miller, HowStuffWorks, "Thirty-four years after disaster film producer Irwin Allen inverted a cruise ship in the name of entertainment, Wolfgang Petersen -- who knows a bit about boat-themed cinema -- has upended another Poseidon and drowned thousands with $160 million worth of watery effects. ..."

'Poseidon' Remakes a Disaster in a Caldron of Distress
A. O. Scott, New York Times, May 12, 2006. "It's hard to think of a big-budget Hollywood picture with less reason for existing than 'Poseidon,' Wolfgang Petersen's remake of 'The Poseidon Adventure,' Ronald Neame's much-derided, much-beloved 1972 disaster-kitsch classic based on a Paul Gallico novel. Well, maybe 'Mission: Impossible III.' And, for that matter, 'RV,' 'Failure to Launch,' 'Rumor Has it,' 'The Pink Panther,' 'Bewitched,' 'The Dukes of Hazzard,' and ... you know what? Just forget I said anything. Anyway, Mr. Petersen's 'Poseidon' is unlikely to replace the original in the hearts of action-hungry moviegoers, though it will probably expunge the memory of the earlier, made-for-TV remake (and also, perhaps, of the 1979 sequel, 'Beyond the Poseidon Adventure'). ..."

A Blockbuster A Week: Week Two
The A.V. Club. "... The new Poseidon delivers a little 'f— you' to Hackman by having its hero Josh Lucas dive headfirst into a pool of fire and emerge unscathed on the other side. Otherwise, the nods to its ancestor are few. A stubborn captain, an Oscar-bait musical performance, a few unexpected deaths, and that's about it. All the lead characters are different, and lack the purposeful philosophical balance of The Poseidon Adventure. They also aren't played by the slate of Hollywood vets who made the first one both kitschy and competently run. As David Poland points out, the movie might've roped in more viewers if the casting directors had embraced camp, and filled the movie with TV stars and old hands. ..."

Das Wasserlogged Boot
LA Weekly, May 10, 2006. "... Not that I can think of a pressing need to remake Ronald Neame's The Poseidon Adventure (1972), as engaging a slice of cheeseball as you could hope to find this side of Titanic — and anyway, Michael Caine already came back in 1979 to sack the poor old hulk in Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. ..."

Bottoms Up on the Poseidon
Andrew Stuttaford, New York Sun, May 12, 2006. "... Taking on Allen's old rust bucket was never going to be easy, as even Allen discovered when he tried in 1979's the less-said-about-it-the-better 'Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.' His original movie may have been schlock, but it was schlock made with a verve and madcap enthusiasm that hasn't been easy to match. It wasn't the first of the disaster movies - essential escapism in an unsettling age - that helped define American cinema in that era (that honor should be reserved for 'Airport') but it was the greatest, and it is the one that resonates most today. There's even (God help us) a fan club, complete with reunions, a Web site, and in the venerable figure of the nonagenarian Ronald Neame, the film's director, its own private Roddenberry. ..."
