There will, of course, never be another Poseidon Adventure, lame remakes notwithstanding. (It's also been attempted with thinly-veiled TPA rip-offs such as Daylight; and I'm certain that if "The Asylum" had been around a few decades earlier, it would have made its own Poseidon mockbuster.)
Nevertheless, we Poseidonites do tend to gravitate toward disaster movies (and scenes) in general, even though we know nothing will ever capture the magic of The Poseidon Adventure. Love 'em or hate 'em, we watch 'em all. That's why this section is here: to help you (and me!) find and watch every known disaster movie, pseudo-disaster movie, disaster scene, and related moment of mayhem put to celluloid.
Formerly called simply "Recommendations," this section contains every disaster movie I know of, and every disaster scene (in non-disaster movies) I can think of that you either should watch, or should avoid like the plague.
As I wrote back in '96: "If you like The Poseidon Adventure, you'll either love or hate these movies...."
Enjoy (or not!). And, as always, your comments, full reviews, and additions are most welcome! - JR |

| Mary Anderson Casavant, Filmmaker Magazine, December 20, 2011. "For many supposedly serious cinema folk, there is no secret pleasure more pleasurable than the disaster film. What makes the genre so familiar - predictable plotlines, one-dimensional characters and an ever-present threat that only kills the people who deserve it – is also what makes it so damn fun. ..." |

| 8 Natural Disaster Movies That Are Not At All Realistic |
| John Coon, Screen Junkies, December 10, 2011. "Box office success for disaster films like 'The Poseidon Adventure' and 'The Towering Inferno' in the early 1970s brought forth a spate of other disaster movies. ... Big budget disaster films made a comeback in the mid-'90s when visual effects technology advanced enough to let them create spectacular natural disasters that were supposed to feel more real. The only problem, as shown with these eight disaster movies, is the natural disaster portrayed on screen does not contain one ounce of realism. ..." |
