JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere):
A larger-than-life character long before she was simply large... One actor I'll watch in almost anything, especially when she plays unbearably shrill, often evil characters (e.g., A Patch of Blue) I just love to hate. (I would have drowned her, too, had I been Robert Mitchum or Montgomery Clift.) ... One of the best products of the method acting school... More than deserved her Oscar for The Diary of Anne Frank (which she later donated to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam)... Roomed with Marilyn Monroe when they were both starting out... Lumped into the legion of MM imitators, which was a bad fit, at best... Many marriages, all of which ended badly. ... Shocking photo of her in Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon, in a police station after one domestic dispute, with Shelley in dark glasses (black eye?). ... Once sued for allegedly beating up a woman at a health club (don't know if it was true, or what happened with the lawsuit). ... Her autobiographical books, beginnig with Shelley, Also Known as Shirley, are a hoot, and well-written. In later years, held court at a restaurant called The Silver Spoon. Stories from contemporaries and fans alike are endless -- and mixed. By fans, she's been described as one of the sweetest, most accommodating big stars ever -- and as the exact opposite. ... Fun fact: Guest-starred with her very own Manny, Jack Albertson, on "Chico and the Man"; her character bore her real name, Shirley Schrift. 
Best Poseidon moment: Aside from her big heart-attack scene? "Mrs. Peter Pan, I'm not."

It is possible that Shelley Winters was not entirely aware of what the film was about, or that she was even in it. ... Drunken Shelley Winters, still drunken but now wearing a more appropriate hat, figures out something is wrong when her son stops responding to the sailing instructions she's been screaming at him through a walkie-talkie. She figures he couldn't have just thrown the walkie-talkie into the ocean so that he wouldn't have to put up with her micro-managing his life anymore; there must have been a giant octopus attack. ..." |
