JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere): He threw parties all the time at his house, which had a fire engine-red front door. He was gay, gay, gay -- which is something a lot of his female fans (who are legion) hate hearing -- and he was as hopeless a movie fan as I am. ... He once got into trouble with the U.S. government for allegedly possessing pirated copies of movies. ... After an illustrious career as a boy star at MGM (he could turn on the waterworks almost as quickly as Margaret O'Brien), he would appear in nearly anything, and often did, from thankless bit parts (e.g., Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry) to the worst TV-movie junk Irwin Allen could dream up (e.g., Flood!). Fortunately, his good pictures outweigh the junk, not in quantity, but in quality. Best film has to be How Green Was My Valley; most fun is any of his entries in the Planet of the Apes series. His lone turn in "The Twilight Zone" -- as an astronaut out of his element in "People Are Alike All Over" -- is typical of his delivery: halting, worried, confused, but genuinely likable. He was also a terrific photographer; my fave is the shot of his lifelong pal Elizabeth Taylor with her hair wrapped in a towel for Life magazine.
Best Poseidon moment: "I rather fancy it."

"... Roddy McDowall, although secure in his position as a member of [the 'Gay Mafia'], was nonetheless congenitally concerned with his place in the Hollywood firmament, As a child actor he was adorable, somewhat winsome, growing into a lithe and androgynous teenager, and a somewhat effete man.
"His social connections, more than his acting chops, were what kept him working constantly -- not to mention his lack of concern for what he did or who he did it with. He was a charming, willing, and adaptable mate to many a diva, including Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, and a very-old-timer named Anna Lee. ... His dinner parties were sought-after invitations and his ability to ride the waves and occasionally the husbands or boyfriends of some of the ladies made him the all-purpose Extra Man of his set.
"Roddy was impossible to dislike. Rather like Peter Lawford with his crowd, he was able able to facilitate secret meetings, clandestine love affairs, and introductions to just about anyone. ...
"One other important quality that did not appear on his resume but was certainly in his basket of goodies was the fact that he was very well hung. Never hurts -- unless in a good way. He was available, ready to serve in any way he could, and agreeable to the disparate needs of both sexes. ...
"One evening ... I watched him work the room like a cordless vacuum cleaner, sucking up celebrity droppings. At one point he came up behind me, put his chin on my shoulder, and cooed seductively. I picked up a shrimp, popped it in his mouth, and he contentedly moved on. ..." |
