July 13, 2006, Century City, California JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere): Catskills comic thistight with legendary gossip columnist Earl Wilson, who was always quoting him. The kind of cheeseball comic of a certain generation & style I would never have much paid attention if he hadn't turned out to be such a terrific actor -- and I'm not even talking about Poseidon; I mean, see Sayonara sometime (you'll be impressed). Brought me to tears with his performance on "E.R." Very nice guy (I got to meet him a couple of years before he died), with a very nice son who seemed slightly surprised, but very appreciative, of how well-liked his old man was by fanatical TPA fans. Story you never heard: A Poseidon fan once camped out in front of Red's house in order to meet him and get his autograph. Red was rightly creeped out, and finally came outside to tell the fan to go away. Me, I would have called the cops, but then I'm sure Red was a much nicer person than I'll ever be. *Best Poseidon* moment: "The growth part doesn't work -- at least not with me, anyway." Buttons Panics During Shipwreck Filming

UPI, July 4, 1972. "Red Buttons, clung, terrified, to a 40-foot-high vent on the set of 'The Poseidon Adventure,' his face a study of absolute horror. ... 'Everybody thinks I'm being funny,' he said. 'But I'm not. I have a chronic case of acrophobia. ...'"
