JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere):
Airplane! did it: I can't watch Leslie Nielsen in TPA — or anything else, for that matter, from Forbidden Planet to Tammy and the Bachelor — without being compelled to append "...and don't call me Shirley" to his every line. There's no limit to the number of times I'll watch the Naked Gun movies — although I haven't yet forgiven him for the bigoted, mean-spirited, low-brow and decidely unfunny An American Carol, in which the otherwise hilarious Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker bunch apparently could no longer restrain themselves from keeping their infamous — and rabid — right-wing ideology out of their movies. Nielsen should have taken a pass on that mess — and probably should have retired after Scary Movie 4. Come to think of it, so should have David Zucker.
Best Poseidon moment: "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley." Whoops, that was Airplane! Make that: "You irresponsible bastard."

"The persona makeover Leslie Nielsen underwent 17 years ago as the goofy doctor in "Airplane!" was so successful that a whole generation sees him as the definitive dim bulb. The old Nielsen was the captain of the ill-fated ocean liner in 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972); the stalwart starship commander of 'Forbidden Planet' (1956); and a respectable romantic lead for Debbie Reynolds in 'Tammy and the Bachelor' (1957). But the new Nielsen was such a hoot in 'Airplane!' that he's been in demand ever since to play dumb..." |
