Eugene Allen Hackman
B. January 30, 1930, San Bernardino, California
JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere):
In the 1970s, around the time he was making unwatchable post-Poseidon pictures like Lucky Lady, he was plastered all over Rona Barrett's gossip magazines. I don't know if Miss Rona had a crush on him or what, but her rags were always swooning over how sexy he was -- despite Hackman's own nonplused reaction (which I paraphrase from memory): "I have a face like a potato." What else...? He's been divorced. He's very private. And if you haven't noticed, he's been officially retired from acting for a few years. He didn't make a huge announcement about it, but instead turned all his attention to writing novels. Can't blame the guy -- he's well over 80 years old now. His best picture? I'm torn between Bonnie and Clyde and The French Connection, although my favorite role of Hackman's is that of the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein.
Best Poseidon moment: It's too difficult to choose just one of his chewing-the-scenery moments (that is, every moment), so I'll choose the first one that comes to mind: "It is true, you pompous ass!".

Gene Hackman's old Pebble Beach estate for sale: $79 million |
| SAcramento Bee, March 3, 2012. "The founder of Sacramento's Panattoni Development Co. is selling one of the nation's most majestic properties: his family's three-home estate on Carmel Beach, near the 10th green of the Pebble Beach golf course. ... Carl and Jane Panattoni bought the complex's main house – a stone chateau once owned by actor Gene Hackman – in 1993, then later added two adjacent homes to create a 4-acre estate that fronts on the northern end of Carmel Beach and is beside one of the world's most famous golfing sites. ..." |

| Here's the story of a man named Hackman |
| Greencastle Banner-Graphic, February 22, 2012. "... For the male lead [in 'The Silence of the Lambs'], Gene Hackman was originally set to play Dr. Hannibal Lecter and even wanted to direct the film as well. Hackman, however, pulled out on the advice of his daughter who thought he material was too dark for his career (especially on the heels of 'Mississippi Burning'). ... Did you know that when the TV series 'The Brady Bunch' was cast in 1969, Hackman was picked to play Mike Brady (ultimately Robert Reed's role)? But he bowed out that time, too, for a film opportunity ('The French Connection' perhaps?). ... [P]icture Hackman as Mike Brady, intoning Dr. Lecter-like to wife Carol and the kids, 'I'm having an old friend for dinner.' ..." |
