Carolyn Lee Jones
B. February 13, 1942, New York, New York
JR's off-the-cuff take (because you can read the same boring old biographical information anywhere):
Where do I start? I fell head over heels for Carol when she was plugging TPA, pre-release, on Mike Douglas's old afternoon talk show, and was even more hooked when I saw her on the big screen. Cut to the chase: I finally met her in 1998, and spent many fun-filled Sunday afternoons at her place in Malibu, often resulting in much side pain because she made me laugh so hard. A self-described Bohemian, Carol is vivacious, indescribably charismatic, talkative, down to earth (she's one of the few Famous People who's actually genuinely interested in people other than herself), very, very smart, and wickedly funny. It's rare to hear her utter a profane word, and even rarer to hear her say anything negative about anyone (except maybe Eddie Fisher, and who can blame her for that?). She did not hate Red Buttons (they were actually quite fond of one another). Half the men she was linked to romantically in the tabloids were just close gay guy friends (e.g., Jack Haley, Jr.; Paul Zastupnevich). She can sing and she does swim. I could write about Carol endlessly, but I won't here; you'll have to get the rest of the story at CarolLynley.com when it comes back up in time for Carol's birthday in 2012.
Best Poseidon moment: Her big scene on the airshaft ladder is a given -- but I've always liked her wide-eyed, near-maniacal look of determination when Martin reminds her not to let go of him as they're about to go underwater: "No -- I won't!"

| Carol Lynley on her way up |
Newsweek Feature Services, May 20, 1972. "Carol Lynley, a Dresden-doll actress whose career foundered on the shoals of Hollywood type-casting, may find herself shipwrecked into stardom. Miss Lynley, at the delightfully ripe old age of 30, had become the perennial ingenue ever since she first appeared in Walt Disney's Light In the Forest, 14 years ago. Part of the problem was therefusal of her lovely blonde face to grow old and part was the reluctance of directors to cast her as anything but a remarkably shapely girl-next-door. ..." |

| Headed Topside: Actress Carol Lynley, more than a pretty face, appears at the Castro Theatre to herald The Poseidon Adventure. |
| Dennis Harvey, San Francisco Bay Guardian, November 8, 1995 (cached). "Slim, sleek as a mink, with straight blond hair and slightly ethereal good looks, Carol Lynley was the quintessential ingenue in 20 or so U.S. and U.K. features from the late '50s to the early '70s. Like an earlier generation's cool young blond, Veronica Lake, her career met the fate unfortunately common among innocents: when she started looking too much the real grown-up, the roles stopped coming. ... Probably more people have seen her in The Poseidon Adventure than in any other film, though ironically that prototype 'disaster movie' would be her last A-budget vehicle. This Friday, Outsider Productions (the folks who brought back The Stepford Wives a couple months back) is presenting Poseidon as a 'high camp on the high seas' Castro Theatre event... This is an occasion for kitschy laughs, and Lynley -- interviewed by phone from her Santa Monica studio -- retains a good sense of humor about this and other past big-screen efforts. ... Now in her early 50s, Lynley doesn't spend much time brooding over her few career 'horror stories' (passing up a role in Five Easy Pieces was one)..." |
