| Queen Mary/Poseidon Cast Publicity Photo
|
A publicity photo that (to my knowledge) wasn't used (note the name of the ship):

The publicity photo that was used (note the name of the ship now):

Caption: "Rear: Jack Albertson, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowall, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley. Center: Stella Stevens, Arthur O'Connell, Shelley Winters, Gene Hackman, Pamela Sue Martin. Queen Mary background."
"Queen Mary background" indeed — but notice the name of the ship: POSEIDON. There was no Photoshopping in those days, so here's how they did it...

Meanwhile... Where was Eric Shea when all these cast-on-the-dock photos were taken? - JR

| Fantastic Voyage's Proteus = Unused Poseidon Adventure Rescue Sub |
Fantastic Voyage poster depicting the Proteus.
The miniaturized submarine (and its miniaturized occupants) in the 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage was called the Proteus (in Greek mythology, Proteus was the son of Poseidon, and a sea god in his own right).
According to Phil Broad of the Model Builders Reference Vault, the Proteus was slated to be recycled for use in The Poseidon Adventure:
"When I first visited 20th Century Fox... one of the things I asked about was the 'mock-up sub from Fantastic Voyage'. The gentleman who's office I was in, Ivan Martin, told me that he thought that it was still around the lot somewhere and 'it had been redone into a rescue sub for the Poseidon Adventure but never used'. I asked what they had done to it and he said 'they covered up the windows, cut off the flange, put a hatch in the side and painted the whole thing red'. Well I was disappointed to hear that but on further investigation we discovered that the mock-up was nowhere on the lot. It had probably been cut up after the decision not to use it on 'Poseidon' so we were spared the awful sight of it at its unglamorous end."
